Pub Review: The Fort Inn, Newquay

The Fort Inn, 63 Fore St, Newquay, TR7 1HA

The Fort Inn is a dog-friendly, family-friendly pub owned by St Austell Brewery. Boasting a selection of local ales and dishes, great views, regular events and an indoor and outdoor play area, The Fort Inn offers something for everyone.

Price Range: ££

Wolfie Ordered: Surf & Turf

I ordered: 100% Cornish beef beefburger with an extra side of onion rings

The Food

Unfortunately, not much good could be said for the food in The Fort Inn. It looks great in presentation, but an overwhelming amount of what we ate was all style and no substance. Wolfie’s prawns were grilled with the shell still on and coated in a parsley butter, but the steak was overcooked and lacking in flavour. My beefburger was dry and needed a drink to help it down. It also came free of onions, prompting me to order the additional all important side of onion rings. We ordered dessert after our meal as a final seal to our date, but Wolfie’s cheesecake had no flavour after the top cherry layer and my salted caramel cake was stale and crunchy with a nearly unpalatable dark chocolate ganaché. The ice cream which they were served with was also lacking in flavour and icy, definitely not a good value for money.

The Service

The staff in The Fort Inn are friendly and helpful, however, their abilities to run an establishment are somewhat lacking. When we visited earlier in the week, they had to find us to tell us that they didn’t actually have any Martini Bianco, despite offering it on their order-from-table app. When we went for food, the server forgot to ring my onion rings through, forcing the staff to hold back from serving our food until the extra was paid. Luckily for them, Wolfie was far more lenient than I was, possibly because he’s worked in a similar business.

The Atmosphere

If you want a quiet drink with a great view, definitely take a coat and sit outside. When we sat inside, I likened this establishment to “Whetherspoons food with a McDonald’s atmosphere”. This pub really, really loves children, and it lets it be known with it’s huge indoor and outdoor play areas. Indoors, on two occasions, children were running up and down the lounge and dining areas, even during busy Sunday carvery times. When we were trying to have a conversation, it was hard to hear each other because of the sound of screaming children, and parents screaming at their children to calm down and behave. There are also a lot of dogs, even where food is being eaten and served. Outside is quieter, but you do need to wrap up warm and be prepared for an Atlantic breeze.

Unfortunately, this establishment loses what it could be solely on what it is. It has spectacular views over Towan Beach and great potential to offer itself as a high-end and luxury venue, yet it serves overcooked food and allows for poorly controlled children. The Fort Inn has so much potential to be a wonderful adult retreat, and yet it loses itself to the masses of screaming children allowed inside. A regrettable 3/5 stars from us.
